COVID-19 Protocol and Guidelines


The following are the Federation of State Massage Therapy Board (FSMTB) guidelines for massage therapy practice during COVID-19. WholeSelf Bodywork is following these guidelines to assist in preventing disease and the spread of COVID-19.

Updated Health Forms

All clients new or returning to bodywork after June 1, 2020 will be required to sign an updated health release form that brings awareness of the risks associated to COVID-19 to clients and therapist (or, potentially, whenever we are within 6 feet of others).

Greeting At The Door

I will greet clients outside my studio door donning my face covering, and offer clients hand sanitizer if they wish to use it before putting on their face covering if they need one (some individually sealed ones will be available outside the studio), and if a client arrives wearing disposable gloves, they will be asked to dispose of these gloves before entering the studio to ensure we both maintain the highest standards of a COVID-19-free environment.

Temperature Check

Next, we will scan the client's temperature. Slight fluctuations beyond the 98.6 standard are common and not typically cause for concern.

 

Temperatures UP TO 100.4°F [38°C] are considered safe, and we can proceed to our intake and session. Clients showing a temperature above 100.4°F (or if they have developed cold or flu-like symptoms or other symptoms suggesting illness since the pre-intake email check-in the day before) will need to be rescheduled at least 14 days out—the full incubation period of COVID—and I will suggest they call their primary care provider for consultation.

Protocol for Face Coverings

Clients are required to wear a mask or face covering (buff, bandana, scarf) before entering and when exiting the massage studio, and when face up on the massage table. If you forget to bring a face covering, feel free to grab an individually sealed face mask from the info bin (as well as antibacterial wipes and a waste basket) in the hallway).

I, too, will be greeting every client wearing a fresh face covering, and changing them (and clothes) throughout the day and in between client sessions.

 

Clients are NOT required to wear a face covering when face down. The head cradle will sport removable pillow cases which allows clients to breathe freely and comfortably.

Pre-Intake Questionnaire

Expect your day-before email reminder to also ask you COVID-specific health screening questions you may be experiencing that might preclude your appointment.

Face Massage

Because face coverings are required for all face-up bodywork, safe face massage is not possible and therefore prohibited at this time. Clients are asked to "re-don" their mask after a session and continue wearing the mask until they are outside the building.

Intake Sessions

As has been the case, clients can find a seat on the EPA-disinfected couch—now covered with fresh covers that are changed between clients—where we sit 6 feet from each other for our intake / "catch-up" portion of our session.

Furniture & Studio Supplies

The treatment room bench that supports clients' dressing/undressing needs will be EPA-product disinfected, steamed, and covered by a fresh covering changed between clients.


The massage table will have a non-permeable cover over the fleece covering at its base, which will be disinfected/sanitized between  appointments. The massage sheets and blankets will be changed regularly with sheets washed with a bleach solution in hot water, as always. Massage stool and other various studio equipment will be disinfected and sanitized between client appointments also.

 

Spare sheets and blankets will be enclosed in plastic bags until ready to use.

Surfaces

Surfaces such as door handles, garbage containers, phone, computer, pens/clipboards, etc. will also be disinfected and sanitized in between client appointments. Carpet will be vacuumed in between client appointments. No-touch trash cans will be available.

Ventilation

As usual, windows will be open as frequently as possible, to allow for comfort, ventilation, and hygiene.

Hygiene Products Available

Both inside and outside the studio (office area and treatment room) hand sanitizer, cleaning wipes, and Kleenex are readily available.

Restrooms

Since WholeSelf Bodywork shares restroom facilities with the 2010 complex, management has let us know they've increased frequency and intensity of restroom cleaning. If you wish for added protection when you return from the restroom, help yourself to personal cleaning wipes and antibacterial gel outside or inside the studio.

Time Between Sessions

As usual, there is always at least 30 minutes between sessions, so there is no need for concern about avoiding other clients when arriving or leaving.

Because the CDC suggests that COVID-19 infected respiratory droplets can be dispersed when people talk, we will try to have limited communication when in session—but please speak up about pressure, warmth, and comfort while on the table. If you don't feel comfortable receiving bodywork for now, that is okay. Schedule what works for you. You'll know when the time is right for you.
